General discussion • SSD Failure (Input/Output errors) [SATA to USB]

Raspberry Pi 4
Ubuntu Server 22
T-Force Vulcan Z (SATA III 480GB SSD)
SATA III to USB 3.0 adapter (Has optional port for power supply that I'm not using.)

I wanted a faster hard drive as my SD cards get less than 100mb/s and the added stability (or so I thought) was a plus, and the convenient Linux boot to USB was nice.

The OS boots perfectly fine (sort of, see next paragraph) and runs great when running normally and not doing a lot of reading/writing (I'm guessing?)

So the issue is, when I build or startup too many processes at once the drive will fail. I will get "Input/output error" and then the terminal will not recognize any commands such as "ls" or "sudo" ("command not found"). This happens when I try to build and startup a web app, which starts up a website, discord bot, database, interactions, and cdn. When I try to do all these at once, the SSD crashes and gives me these Input/output errors and stops recognizing commands.

On bootup, it can work fine- if there is not a lot of processes that startup on boot. For example, I use PM2 to have a lot of Discord bots and other processes start on boot. I did a work around where these processes start in a delay, so 10 seconds between each one before starting the next. However, if my main web app, or if I don't use this 10 second delay between starting each process, the SSD will crash. When it happens during boot I can't even ping or SSH into the device ("Destination host unreachable" or just timed outs), hooking up a monitor to it is a lot of work so unless really required to gather logs I'd rather not.

So has anyone else had issues when using an SSD via SATA to USB adapter where it works fine when not stressed or working at a higher capacity? There is an optional port for a power supply, IDK if a lack of power is causing this issue though. So I'm hoping if someone else has had a similar issue like this before?
