Networking and servers • Can I sleep at night with a home full of wifi devices?

I only did 30 minutes of forum diligence by searching various related topics and while I did read a lot about static vs dynamic vs firewall vs vpn, I did not find what I needed....

The Question is in the topic title, and all I am looking for is encouragement to continue my quest for home network safety from the dark side hackers who my wife fears are lurking in passing cars or even in remote Hackjackistan ready to pounce on our feeble network.

But, I am not looking for technical techniques here on this topic question.

The quick background is that our house has a Nest thermostat, a Honeywell/Resideo thermostat and two appliances with SmartLife. All three apps give us great control from our smart phone whether we are local or across the country somewhere.

Today, I took an unused RPi4 and installed Home Assistant for the very first time. It is up and running and I added a $12 wifi temperature sensor to it as my first "device" .

The Home Assistant forum and the internet in general are full of warnings about "opening your network" to remote connection without protection….

Here is my "can I sleep ?" question:

How can apps like Nest and Honeywell be installed by the millions, by normal folks, and all that is required to initiate the devices is a photo of the QR code and filling in of an ssid and password without any thought by those unwashed (technologically speaking) millions about home internet security?

In a few more words, why could I sleep well before today but need to go vpn/static/router changed to get the same sleep tomorrow, all because of Home Assistant. Maybe, what I am asking is how the heck can Nest etc be safe for me to use? There were no router modifications required for it.....
