Raspberry Pi Desktop for PC and Mac • Installing Debian versus Raspberry Pi Desktop for PC (Setting a domain name)

As others have pointed out, Raspberry Pi Desktop hasn't been updated in a while and some have recommended installing Debian instead. The installation process for Debian on a PC seems to be identical to that for Raspberry Pi Desktop save for a few differences.

1. It asks to you to set a root password, as well as hostname, username and password, during the installation itself.
2. It asks you to set a domain name for the host.
3. It asks you if you want to configure the package manager to use a network mirror as opposed to relying only on installation media.

Points 1 and 3 appear self-evident. Raspberry Pi Desktop by default seems to exclude use of a root password, sets the hostname to "raspberry" and allows the user to set username and password on first bootup. It also chooses the "yes" option by default on whether or not package manager should connect to a network mirror (though I'm unclear why anyone would not want to configure apt this way).

Point 2 seems confusing for users with little knowledge of local networking. Given that this option is missing during installation of Raspberry Pi Desktop, I'm presuming this is set to some default value. My questions are:

What exactly is the default setting for domain name during installation of Raspberry Pi Desktop?

More generally, what should it be set to if you are using Debian or Raspberry Pi Desktop on a PC purely for basic productivity (browsing + word processing)?
What should it never be set to and are there any consequences of leaving it blank?

My main concern is that putting in the wrong setting here might misconfigure the router or network.
