Graphics, sound and multimedia • VLC & MPV do not work with large files (> 1G) on Samba Drive on Raspberry Pi OS w/ RPI 4

After going through all of the encoding options, codecs, and every other VLC option, VLC and MPV both silently fail with the following error:

file system error: read error: invalid argument
(error from VLC Messages)

on files > 1 G when reading from a Samba server.

Such files work on Linux Mint, Windows 10, and dubiously enough, Roku Media Player via DLNA. Small files, < 1G, work OK. It is caused by file size and not encoding; H.264 or H.265 both work or don't work based on file size.

These files, when copied to the RPI SD card, do work, but in MPV only.

Any ideas on getting the Pi to play videos directly from the Samba server?

Basic system info:

BTW, not to rant, but the RPI platform is just terrible as a TV streaming box. Screwy resolution, having to try multiple iterations of HDMI config.txt settings, HDMI cable issues (some work, some don't, and HDMI Boost settings are ignored), and the list goes on and on, just to get a traditional desktop on a TV screen. If anyone comes across this post thinking about using the Pi as a streaming box, forget it.
