General discussion • Looking for microphones...

I would like to create a "sound finder". You're probably wondering what the heck is that? :D

Well, basically, I'm thinking of placing three microphones that can determine the direction of a sound. The tricky part is that the microphones must be no more than 20 inches apart in a triangle and the sound could be coming from up to 200 feet away. I realize I will have to move to get an accurate distance, but I need to first be able to figure a direction to go. Depending on which microphone "hears" the sound first, I'll move the microphones to a different spot and "listen" again. Then, it's just a question of triangulation. 8-) The sound is not constant. It might just sound for 1 tenth of a second, but could be up to 5 seconds long. During the time the sound is on, the source does not move, but when silent, the source might move. But I have to figure that out later.
Ha, ha. I just realized that I'm thinking of making a "Marco, Polo" machine. (IYKYK  )

BTW, the size constraint is due to the fact that this must be mobile. So I'm mounting it on a RPi4b Robot Car Kit for learning robotics that I got from Amazon. I bought the robot car and an RPi4b Project Kit and did all the projects that came with them and now, I came up with this project on my own.

So, my questions are:
Will inexpensive regular microphones work?
Are there different types of microphones that work better for this?
Which microphones should I be looking to buy for something like this?
And most importantly, do I need to buy a board of some sort that sends signals to an RPi4b for this to work?
