Troubleshooting • RPi 5 won't boot: "Failed to isolate default target"

My RPi 5 was working fine. I plugged in an external wifi adapter and it came up as wlan1. I did a sudo apt update and upgrade and that worked OK. Then I tried to install aircrack-ng. 58% of the way through it hung on a line mentioning "wpa supplicant" and hung. I power-cycled the machine. Now all I get is

Code:

e2fsck 1.47.0 (5-Feb-2023)rootfs: clean, 231345/1902560 files, 2149612/7669248 blocks[!!!!!!] Failed to isolate default target.
and then it hangs. I tried booting without the external wifi adapter but got the same result. Is this recoverable?
